Jenny and my friend, Kelly, was super helpful a couple weeks ago. I was looking to enhance my typical art supply birthday gift. I wanted some ideas to challenge the fine motor skills of the birthday boy. So I wrote a note to Kelly Giaquinto, OTR/L, who is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist.
Here is what she said, “It’s always good to strengthen the muscles, particularly the arches. A fun way to do that is with spray or squirt bottles. How about having him make a drawing of a monster with markers, working on coloring in the spaces with his elbow on the table and just using his fingers to move the markers. Be sure to encourage isolating the fingers from hand and arm movements. Then comes the fun part. Hang up the picture, have the boy lie on his belly, and squirt the monster! Melt the monster! Always a fun one.”
Off I went to collect the supplies. The squirt bottles came in a package of three so my kids had fun while I figured out the details to write up instructions for the Drippy Monster Drawing Kit.
Thanks Kelly!
