Scherenschnitte. It’s the German or Swiss art of paper cutting.
I can make a good snowflake or line of paper dolls.
But I have this picture from my grandparents house (it’s not signed, so I don’t know who the artist is):
And if you go ahead and search scherenschnitte on Etsy you’ll see some wicked landscapes. Some of the trees are incredible.
I like the symmetry in some, the crazy detail in others, and concentration that must be involved in creating all of them. I like the complexity of the design, yet the ultimate simplicity that it’s just one flat piece of paper with holes in it. I also like using sharp scissors.
